Paul Sample  (1896-1974)

Paul Sample was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1896.  His attendance at Dartmouth College was finished after the interruption of WW I, and his education was continued at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles.  By 1926 Sample was an instructor and chair of the art department at the University of Southern California.  Sample was inspired by the regionalist artists of the depression era, which chronicled a distinctly rural American way of life.  In 1938 Sample moved to take a position as artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College, and in 1940 was elected to the National Academy of Design.  Sample retired in 1962, and died in Vermont in 1974
