Joseph Raphael  (1869-1950)

Joseph Raphael was born in Jackson, California, in 1869.  At the age of 18 Raphael began 10 years of study at the California School of Design under Arthur Mathews.  In 1902 he moved to Paris to continue his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Academie Julian.  Though he continued to exhibit his works in California, including a Gold Medal winning entry in the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, Europe remained Raphaelís home for 37 years until the onset of WW II forced his return to his native state in 1939.  One of the leading proponents of French Impressionism in California, Raphael was active in San Francisco until his death there in 1950.
