Agnes Pelton (1881-1961)
Agnes Pelton was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1881 to American parents. Her childhood was largely spent in Switzerland and France. Pelton graduated from the Pratt Institute in New York at the age of 19, and soon after began studying with Arthur Wesley Dow.
Pelton was a regular visitor to the southwest, frequently staying in Taos at the invitation of Mabel Dodge. In Taos Pelton banded together with a group of ten artists who called themselves the Transcendental Painting Group, who went against the traditional grain of representational painting.
In 1931 Pelton settled in the California desert town of Cathedral City where her works were divided between her transcendental abstractions and her more commercially viable soft-focus flowering desert landscapes. Pelton spent 30 years in Cathedral City, ultimately dying there in 1961.
