Rowena Meeks Abdy (1887-1945)
Rowena Meeks Fischer Abdy was born in Vienna Austria, in 1887, and lived amid the culture of Europe until she moved with her family to California in 1898. As a young woman, Abdy began her art studies at the prestigious San Francisco School of Design under the tutelage of Arthur Mathews.
Abdy was a versatile artist, whose oils, watercolors and charcoal sketches all showed a strong modernist vision of early California. She was especially drawn to the historic Spanish era monuments and crumbling adobes of early Monterey and San Juan Bautista, two early Mission towns she would at times call home. It was during an extended stay in Monterey that Abdy spent time as a student of Armin Hansen.
Abdy exhibited her works extensively at venues that include the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix.
