Jules Pages (1867-1946)
Jules Pages was born in San Francisco in 1867, where his father had an engraving business in to which Jules was apprenticed. In 1888 Pages traveled to Paris to study at the Academie Julian, and though he returned often and kept his ties to his native city, he would for all practical purposes become a resident of France for rest of his life.
Pages began teaching at the Academie Julian in 1902, and would eventually serve as that school’s Director. Pages was extremely well received in France, and in 1910 was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
Forced to return to San Francisco during the periods of World War, Pages returned to San Francisco at the outset of WW II, where he died in 1946.
