Emil Kosa, Jr. (1903-1968)

Emil Kosa, Jr. was born in Paris, France, in 1903.  His father was a Czech artist who moved his family to the United States when Emil Jr. was four.  Kosa studied in his father’s homeland at the Prague Academy as a teenager, and followed his time there with further studies at the California Art Institute, the Academie des Beaux Arts.

Kosa taught at the Chouinard and Otis Art institutes, and for 35 years worked for the 20th Century Fox movie studio as a special effects artist, a job which earned him an Oscar award in 1963 for his work on “Cleopatra.”

Equally adept with oils and watercolors, Kosa painted in the plein air style as well as with the scene painters of the 1940’s and ‘50’s.  He was also an accomplished portraitist, having been commissioned to paint Governor Earl Warren.  Emil Kosa, Jr. died in Los Angeles in 1968.
