William Franklin Jackson (1850-1936)

W.F. Jackson was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1856 and at the age of 12 moved with his family to California.  Jackson attended the California School of Design where he befriended William Keith, with whom he would make numerous painting trips.

Following his time at the School of Design, Jackson moved to Sacramento and in 1884 was asked to be the first Curator and Director of the newly formed Crocker Museum Art School in that city, a position he held for over 50 years.

William F. Jackson, like John Gamble and Granville Redmond, focused his landscapes on the wildflower covered hills of California.  Often painting in the foothills of the Sierras that are near to Sacramento, Jackson was active and painting until his death at the age of 85.
