Alice Chittenden (1859-1944)

 

Best known as an artist who specialized in floral subjects, Alice Chittenden was born in Brockport, New York in 1859.  Chittenden moved with her family to San Francisco when she was a baby, and San Francisco would be her home for the rest of her life. 

 

Chittenden attended the San Francisco School of Design, where she would later hold a teaching position for over 40 years.  Famous for her wildflower paintings, Chittenden executed hundreds of works of Californiaís native wildflowers.

 

Alice Chittenden exhibited extensively for over 60 years at venues all over the Western United States, and as far away as Chicago, before her death in San Francisco on October 13, 1944.
