Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972)
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1883, Johann Berthelsen emigrated with his family to the U.S. in 1889. At 18 he enrolled in the Chicago Musical College to start a 4 year term of study for voice and music. Following this, Berthelsen joined the traveling Grand Opera Company as lead baritone, and it was through music that he supported himself until he devoted himself to painting in 1932.
Working in both pastels and oils, his works are generally small in scale and frequently feature inclement weather and changing seasons or light. Finding inspiration in urban scenery, especially New York’s Central Park, Johann Berthelsen is best known today for his snowy winter scenes.
